infinite io on Monday came out of stealth and announced a network-based storage controller that transparently migrates inactive data to S3-compatible cloud storage with no changes to applications.

The NSC-110 sits in the network and acts as a proxy server. It inspects each packet to determine if it is CIFS or NFS data and assigns metadata references to it. After determining by policy that data is inactive on the NAS filer or application server, the NSC-1000 migrates the data to the cloud, where it can be archived inexpensively.

The NSC-110 is currently in beta testing and is expected to ship in the third quarter starting at $50,000.
